In 1977, Saint Petersburg Preservation Inc. (SPPI) was organized as a charitable nonprofit
corporation. SPPI chose as its mission:
(1) educating the public about local historic architectural
resources
(2) landmarking or assisting in the landmarking of deserving sites
and structures
(3) preserving sites and structures previously landmarked.
SPPI is celebrating and building on its successful application for
the listing on the National Register of Historic Places of the St.
Petersburg Downtown Historic District. This designation in 2004 was the
result of years of work and financial support by SPPI members, and
support by the City of St. Petersburg.
Current goals include increasing our membership base; providing a
newsletter; sponsoring educational events; supporting the St. Petersburg
Downtown Historic District by designing and marketing a plaque to owners
of contributing structures; and participating with residents,
governments, and historic preservation organizations in Pinellas County
for better identification, appreciation, and protection of historic
structures and sites.
